I need help finding a Bible I will actually want to read. I buy Bibles, read them for a little while, then stop. I give them away to Goodwill. I have tried the following versions: KJV, NKJV, NIV, NLT, CEV (I think). I have tried study Bibles, devotional Bibles, One-Year Bibles and plain ordinary Bibles.

Study Bibles are nice but I don’t really like all of the footnotes at the bottom of the page, I find them distracting, and I don’t really read them anyway. Devotions are OK but I don’t read them that much because I feel like I can’t really relate to the story, or the tone seems too “preachy”, or I feel like I am not a good enough Christian. I find that it is difficult to find specific passages or verses in One Year Bibles without looking all over the place.

I would like a Bible without distracting footnotes or side notes, devotions for “less than perfect’ women (or people in general), and that shows how the Bible is relevant to life today. And shows how to get to know God better.
Serious replies only, from Bible-believing Christians. Nonsense answers, and answers that make fun of Christianity, will be reported. Thank you

I am in a slight dilemma. I love to study and learn about theology, I enjoy reading about theology. I enjoy looking into and refuting critics, misconceptions, etc. What some people may consider boring or dull, such as writing papers enhancing the understanding of women rights in Islam, I enjoy and have fun doing. I would love to take this as a career path, but there are a few stumbling blocks that either I need to get over, or stop at. I am an only child and ever since kindergarden my family has been urging me to be an M.D. or Medical Doctor. I must admit, this field intrigues me in a vast amount of ways, financially its unsurpassed, and the feeling of making my parents proud is undescribable. My question(s) is A. What are the careers that are available for one who studies in the field of theology with a PhD. Please dont include parochial careers. B. What is the approximate pay of said careers. C. M.D. or PhD in Theology? D. What universities would give me the best education on theology in the academic perspective instead of the devotional perspective.

Please be precise and informative in your answers. Thank you.

Literature Student-What’s the best Bible to study from?

I am an English major and I would like to study the Bible more in depth from a LITERATURE perspective. I don’t want a devotional bible (I already have those). I sometimes think I should go with the first King James Version because it’s the first English Bible, but there are still so many choices! I have heard of the ESV for literary study, but do not know much about it.

Ideally, this Bible would also have the Apocrypha. This study is new for me, it’s something I’m doing more on my free time so any other supplement recommendations on how to get started would really help! (Especially about women.)

Amazon.com has been a great tool, but I prefer to hear from someone that has learned through trial and error.

Thanks ahead of time!

The reason why I ask this is because although this is a depressing topic, I’ve been reading up on the people from the past and present who became martyrs for God and also because as unpleasant as this is, I do find quite a bit of stength for my faith from these brave individuals for Jesus. I purchased books entitled, “Voices Of The Faithful,” which is a devotional of all the courageous marytrs, Foxe’s Book Of Marytrs, and “Jesus Freaks.” Right now I started reading a book entitled,”Sister Freaks,” written by Rebecca St. James. It’s about women who gave up everything in their lives for Christ, it includes the true story of Joan of Arc. I bookmarked The Voice of the Martyrs in my favorites too. Do you find the lessons from marytrdom both heartbreaking but at the same time motivating as well?

“Sexual excess will effectually destroy a love for devotional exercises, will take from the brain the substance needed to nourish the system, and will most effectively exhaust the vitality. No woman should aid her husband in this work of self-destruction. She will not do it if she is enlightened and has true love for him. The more the animal passions are indulged, the stronger do they become, and the more violent will be their clamors for indulgence. Let God-fearing men and women awake to their duty. Many professed Christians are suffering with paralysis of nerve and brain because of their intemperance in this direction.

It is not pure, holy love which leads the wife to gratify the animal propensities of her husband at the expense of health and life. If she possesses true love and wisdom, she will seek to divert his mind from the gratification of lustful passions to high and spiritual themes by dwelling upon interesting spiritual subjects.”
